About MPA

McLean Project for the Arts
McLean, VA, United States
MPA is a non-profit visual arts center founded in 1962 to exhibit the work of emerging and established regional artists. The mission of McLean Project for the Arts is to exhibit the work of emerging and established artists from the mid-Atlantic region; to promote public awareness and understanding of the concepts of contemporary art; and to offer instruction and education in the visual arts. In addition to its program of high quality, professionally-curated art exhibitions, MPA presents special traveling exhibitions from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. MPA/Corcoran, an educational partnership, offers art classes for children and adults taught by instructors from the Corcoran College of Art + Design. MPA also presents the Art Reach program for area schools, gallery talks, and day trips to area museums and galleries. All works of art exhibited at MPA are for sale unless otherwise noted.

Welcome to MPA's New Online Newsletter

by McLean Project for the Arts

Welcome to MPAartnews!

In an effort to be “green” (and to trim our budget), we have made the decision to stop printing and mailing our newsletter.  But, we hope that you will enjoy our new quarterly online version—it will feature the latest happenings at McLean Project for the Arts with lots of pictures and with the occasional video clip—it’s a more interactive way to learn what’s new at MPA.*

Thanks to your generous donations and our ongoing cost-cutting measures, MPA continues to weather the economic storm.  Recently, the MPA Spring Benefit reached its fundraising goal of $90,000 to support MPA’s annual expenses for its exhibitions and educational programs!  We are truly grateful to all who contributed and to those who braved the damp, cold evening to come and celebrate with us. We thank Windows Catering Company too for their spectacular service and delicious food.  Read more in the article below and view some great pictures from the evening, with special thanks to Jennifer Berman of Ashton Imaging for donating her time and talent.  There is also a link to her site if you’d like to see or purchase the pictures.

We have good news about MPAartfest 2010 coming to McLean Central Park on October 3rd:  Supervisor John Foust and his wife Marilyn have agreed to serve as Honorary Co-Chairs of the event, and the McLean Community Foundation is our sponsor for the Children’s ArtWalk at MPAartfest again this year.

Read all about it here.  I hope you enjoy our first edition of MPAartnews!

MPA's Art Reach Program Reaches All Ages

by McLean Project for the Arts

ArtReach Director, Sharon Fishel always finds a way to relate our winter exhibitions with the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs).  Last year 1000 students from Fairfax County came to MPA for  docent-led tours which include a hands on art activity.   We provide free bus transportation to MPA’s galleries to Project Excel schools, schools designated by Fairfax County Public Schools as “at-risk” schools with large numbers of English as second language students or students who qualify for free or reduced lunches.

Sharon Fishel and Anthony Brock worked with approx. 20 students from Longfellow MS on the Teen Center Mural during four sessions this past winter 2010.

MPA ArtReach conducted a watercolor workshop and slide talk called "Special Places" at the Lewinsville Senior Center.  Here Sharon helps a Lewinsville senior with her project.

McLean Community Foundation Signs on for MPAartfest 2010

by McLean Project for the Arts

MCF has signed on as the first $5000 sponsor of the 2010 MPAartfest which will be held on Sunday, October 3.  For the 3rd year in a row, the McLean Community Foundation will sponsor the popular Children's ArtWalk which features the artwork of students K-6 from public and private McLean area schools. MPAartfest turns McLean Central Park into a family friendly arts event featuring the sale of fine art and crafts of 40 juried artists. Last year's event attracted 6000 art lovers.  Although MPAartfest is a fundraising event for McLean Project for the Arts, it is free for the community to attend.  MPA and MPAartfest are supported by corporate and individual sponsorships.  For more information about MPAartfest sponsorship opportunities, please call Debbie Jardot at 703-790-1953.

The McLean Community Foundation has funded educational and civic endeavors, projects that enhance the arts, improve our environment, and support social services programs for our residents.  MCF has funded nearly $1,000,000 in grants, contributing to many and varied projects that improve the lives of our citizens and the surroundings of McLean. Spring Benefit 2010

by McLean Project for the Arts

MPA's Spring Benefit is always the highlight event of Spring in McLean.  This year was even more fun due to the fact that everyone had to huddle together to stay warm as you can see from the pictures.  The guests of honor were Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell and First Lady Maureen McDonnell.

MPA Collectors Circle

by McLean Project for the Arts

In April, MPA launched a new program for donors at the $2500 level and above.  The MPA Collectors Circle entitles donors to receive complimentary invitations to two or more exclusive events per year, including "behind the scenes" tours at artists' studios, museums and in the homes of local collectors.
For our first event, the MPA Collectors Circle had the unique opportunity to visit the home of our hosts Joel and Ricki Kanter whose stunning collection of contemporary art from Lichtenstein to Stella, wowed our MPA Collectors Circle founding members.  The MPA Collectors Circle got to hear some remarkable stories about the collection. The Kanters frequently loan pieces from their collection to art museums and said that when a piece goes out on loan, it feels like they've lost a member of the family. The afternoon with the Kanters was an exciting the kick-off for the MPA Collectors Circle.

For additional information about MPA donor programs, please contact Debbie Levin Jardot, Development Director at djardot@mpaart.org or Sandy Treanor at streanor@mpaart.org 703- 790-1953

Did You Know?

by McLean Project for the Arts

Did you know that MPA's ArtReach program helps to fill the art gap for Special Education students in Fairfax County Public Schools?

The ArtReach program provides art enrichment in the classroom as well as gallery visits offering tours and hands on projects in our intimate gallery setting. Longfellow Middle School, McLean and Langley High School's special education classes are regular visitors.

Below are Longfellow Middle School teacher Ms. Joann Nelson and some of her students working on a "butterfly mapping collage" in response to the Jeremy Drummond and Michael Mansfield exhibitions.
